Sturdiwheat proudly promotes Perennial Percent, the world’s first program for perennial grain products. The trademark represents dedication to improving soil health and water quality — regenerative practices integral to everyday quality of life and sustained agricultural production.  Any of our mixes displaying this trademark have incorporated a varying percentage of perennial grains, like Kernza, into the original recipes.

Kernza grain exemplifies American Ingenuity, developed by The Land Institute, the University of Minnesota Forever Green Initiative, and Rodale Institute. Perennial crops keep soil covered year-round and produce multiple harvests from single plantings. Deep roots stabilize the soil, essential to absorbing excess fertilizer and reducing sediment runoff — thus benefitting waterways including the mighty Mississippi just outside our doors in Red Wing.

Why did we incorporate Kernza® into our muffin mix?

• Growing Kernza® grain, a perennial intermediate wheat grass,  yields large ecological benefits that start in the field and continue to trickle downstream and eventually make it to your table.
• For example, 49% of wells in agricultural areas in Minnesota have nitrate concentrations higher than EPA standards for drinking water. Continuous living cover crops have long roots that utilize nitrate deep in the soil before it makes it into the ground water.
