River City Days Sturdiwheat Pancake Flipping Contest 2009

Sturdiwheat gave away 5 Zojirushi Gourmet Sizzle grills to the winner of each flipping contest. It was very entertaining to watch the contestants flip flapjacks over their heads adorned in chef hads and Sturdiwheat checkered aprons. We had never seen so many pancakes hit the ground just to be scooped up again and tossed about by all the giggling children armed with spatulas. Hope to see you all next year and keep up the good flippin’.

Where is the Delta Queen?

Many people have been wondering why they have not seen the Delta Queen on the Mississippi River this year. This historic steamboat as well as the Mississippi Queen and American Queen have been regular visitors here in Red Wing, MN for many decades. None of these beautiful boats will be carrying passengers in 2009. Ambassador International owns the three paddle wheelers and announced that there will be no scheduled trips this year and that all three boats are up for sale. The Delta Queen was built in 1927 and was the oldest overnight passenger steamboat operating in the United States. On October 31, 2008 the exemption from modern shipbuilding codes expired prohibiting the Delta Queen from operating on any river due to her wooden substructure. The Delta Queen is now being used as a floating hotel (not allowed to leave the dock with passengers) in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The other two steamboats are docked at the Perry Street Wharf in New Orleans. The future of these historic boats is any one’s guess. One organization is trying to motivate Congress to allow the Delta Queen go back into operation on the river. For more information go to www.save-the-delta-queen.org

Dad Loses Fishing Contest

Dad may have lost the contest but he got bonus points for cuteness! Has anyone ever caught a sauger this small? For those of you that have never heard of a sauger, its very similar to a walleye. Needless to say all we heard all night was “My fish was so much bigger than Dad’s”. Hoping to have a Sturdiwheat fish fry this weekend if we can catch more of the big ones and less of the cute ones!

A Good Morning

This morning’s temperature was cool. So some warm hot chocolate hit the spot. And then I couldn’t resist making some bread. Don’t you love the smell of bread baking? It fills the house with that warm feeling and aroma. It just may warm the heart too. The smell elicits definite images of fresh bread even before it is done baking. The taste and smell invades your senses as you imagine enjoying the flavor. And that’s just what the smell does. Just wait for the taste!

Long process to make it? No! Sturdiwheat! It was in the pantry. Baguettes today. Opened the bag. Added the water. Kneaded the dough (THIS is one of the reasons I wanted to make the bread.) Later I formed the loaves and put it in the oven according to the simple instructions.

And now that smell has permeated the entire house. So easy. So healthy. So delicious.

I won’t be able to wait for lunch. I will be having some bread in a few moments. With just a touch of some marmalade. Wish you could join me. (I will be having more bread for lunch.)

Lake Pepin

The drive along Lake Pepin between Minnesota and Wisconsin this weekend was really a showcase of spring. Flowers inching up from the ground. The shades of green as far as the eye can see. The warm sunshine. The welcoming songs of birds urging us to be out and enjoying the refreshing of life.

Take the drive! Stop at a scenic spot and have a picnic. Enjoy the lunch. Enjoy nature. Enjoy the time.
