Flap Jack here. I am wondering –

What is “Short” about Shortcake?

And – while your at it, is there a Longcake? Tallcake? Neverendingcake?

    Good question! In this instance the name Shortcake is not a reference to the height, length, or time it takes to devour the cake, but rather the texture of the cake. The “Short” in Shortcake comes from using shortening or butter to make the cake. Shortening get its name from the term “to shorten” which means to make a dough flaky or easily crumbled by the addition of shortening.

    Another interesting fact: The earliest known reference to Shortcake is in Shakespeare’s play The Merry Wives of Windsor published in 1602.
